ISLAND VILLAGE PUBLIX
Clearwater Beach, Florida
87,300 Sq. Ft.
54,800 Sq. Ft Retail
Enclosed Parking Below Building

The redevelopment of this existing 1970s grocery anchored shopping center, located below the flood plain on a Florida barrier island, required raising the Publix grocery store above the flood plain. To fulfill Publix’s commitment to the community to be operational, providing vital services to the surrounding community hours after a catastrophic event, the design elevates the store 18 feet above the on-grade parking garage below and is equipped with twin duel-fuel generators powering 100% of the required electrical services for the store and is structurally hardened to withstand Category 5 wind loads and a Level 5 storm surge.

The existing “Spanish Colonial” style shopping center was redesigned to a contextually appropriate “Caribbean-Florida” vernacular that more closely reflects the style of this island community. Patrons, carts, and products are transported from the grade-level plaza and parking garage to the custom Publix store on the second level via 4 oversized elevators.
