To fulfill Publix’s commitment to the community to be operational, providing vital services to the surrounding community hours after a catastrophic event, the design elevates the store 18 feet above the on-grade parking garage below and is equipped with twin duel-fuel generators powering 100% of the required electrical services for the store and is structurally hardened to withstand Category 5 wind loads and a Level 5 storm surge.
The existing “Spanish Colonial” style shopping center was redesigned to a contextually appropriate “Caribbean-Florida” vernacular that more closely reflects the style of this island community. Patrons, carts, and products are transported from the grade-level plaza and parking garage to the custom Publix store on the second level via 4 oversized elevators.
